The Greek Orthodox Patriarchate of Jerusalem condemned Friday's attack on the Church of St George in the Hamoud area of Karak, southern Jordan, calling it a cowardly act that struck its own community.

Gunmen attacked the church during a funeral, about 90 kilometres south of Amman. Early figures cited by the Patriarchate gave seven dead and 34 wounded; Jordanian authorities later put the death toll at nine. Jordan declared three days of mourning.

“We shall remain here as witnesses to the faith, regardless of how great the challenges or how severe the trials may be.”

Patriarch Theophilos III and the Holy Synod said the attack would strengthen, not weaken, ties between Christians and Muslims, and expressed confidence that Jordan's security services would bring those responsible to justice.
