October is picking season across the West Bank, and this year it opened, in the UN’s word, ominously: attacks on pickers, trees and the roads to the groves.

The head of the Umm Safa village council said settlers entered the western neighbourhood after midnight, set three vehicles alight and daubed racist slogans on walls.

A Palestinian commission says it has recorded 482 attacks on the olive harvest in nine West Bank governorates since picking began this month.

OCHA counted at least 160 harvest-related settler attacks in the first two weeks of October, while movement restrictions keep thousands of farmers from their trees.
